What to read: Pretty Little Liars books - XX Chromosomes

What to read: Pretty Little Liars books

Are you a fan of Pretty Little Liars? I absolutely love the show. I became a fan from the first episode. If you like the TV show as much as I do, you're gonna love the books as well! Although, the Pretty Little Liars books target young adults, the characters are so complex and the stories so well written, that even if you are older you gonna enjoy the series.
It is very important to read them in order. Don't make my mistake by starting with the third book because I didn't know the proper order.
There are currently 14 books released, book #15 coming soon, and I will post them in order. I highly recommend you to read the Pretty Little Liars books and don't let the fact that it's young adult series stop you. I am a 25 years old and I love them. There's a lot of secrets, mysteries and brilliantly written characters in these books.
If you've watched the show and read the books already, let me know what you think. Which is better: the books or the TV show?

Pretty Little Liars Books

Pretty Little Liars books

The Pretty Little Liars books are written by Sara Shepard. The first books were so successful that they turned into a TV show.

I must admit, I am a huge fan of the show and I didn't know that the idea started from books. In fact, most of my friends who watch it, didn't even know that the books existed. It's a shame because the book series is just as great. They have everything that makes you love the show. The awesome secrets and mysteries, the unique and engaging plot that makes you want to see the next episode immediately after you finish watching the current one and the brilliant realistic characters. You can't expect anything different since the author is the same.
So, there are all the books in order:

1.Pretty Little Liars
The book was published in 2006 and it's obviously the first one of the series. Sara Shepard wrote Pretty Little Liars based on her experience living in Philadelphia, of course highly exaggerated.
The story is about four high school best friends Aria, Hanna, Emily and Spencer and their friend Ali who suddenly disappeared (but of course you already know that if you've watched the TV show). All of them hides ugly secrets that only Ali knew. After her disappearance, the four girls start to receive messages, all pointing to their secrets. Scary, right?
You won't want to put this book down. It's a great start of the book series.

"Flawless" is the second book of the series. The book picks up right where the first one leaves off, as the stories of the girls really grew crazier.
Now since we know that the Ali's body has been found, the four girls are back together with their hideous secrets.
Full of suspense and surprises, I read "Flawless" for 2 days. I can't say that it's better than the first book but it was definitely important for the development of the amazing plot.
Pretty Little Liars
"Perfect" was published in 2007 and at the time was the best book of the series.
Like I said, I read that book first, without knowing the proper order, and that book got me addicted to the series.
The girls are in complete mess, each of them with their growing problems and still trying to figure out who's sending the anonymous threatening messages.
The thing that I like most in this series is that there's no way you can predict what's going to happen. I was surprised all the time and every action of the characters has a significant impact on the story.

"Unbelievable" is one of the best books of Pretty Little Liars series. If you read all the books so far, you already have some suspicions about who A. is. In this book you will finally see the truth about her.
There are so many mysteries and surprising turns in this one. "Unbelievable" was supposed to be the last book but Sara Shepard agreed to write more due to pressure from her publisher.
I am glad she did, because the series got better and better after the 4th book.

Did you figured out who A. is before the girls do?

Pretty Little Liars Books: Pretty Little Secrets
Pretty Little Secrets is book 4.5 of the series. Although, you can skip it and read book 5 without missing any significant parts of the plot, I highly recommend it. It's like a bonus book.
It's a collection of four stories from the point of view of each of the main characters: Emily, Spencer, Aria and Hanna.
Sara Shepard wrote this books differently from the rest of the series, but I enjoyed it.

If we think about the books like they are a TV show, "Wicked" is the start of the second season.
It seems like all the hideous secrets are in the past and the girls finally can have a rest. But can they, really?
Their friendship isn't strong like before, as each of them still keeps a small secret from the other. Emily, Spencer, Aria and Hanna are no longer open to each other and nothing is the same anymore.
It's a great renewal of the series. More mysteries, secrets, lies and drama. Each books is gonna be better than the previous.

"Killer" is the sixth books of the series.
Seems like there's a new A. threatening the girls and they are totally confused. People die or simply vanish and no one knows who's the killer.
I couldn't put the book down because I wanted to see who's the killer. I saw it coming but I won't spoil anything for you.
"Killer" is an easy and fast read. At the end of the books I was so confused. What the heck happened? Sara Shepard knows how to make you want to read the next book.

If "Killer" was too slow book, "Heartless" really gets you back on track. The storyline gets even more complex with much more twists.
Since Sara Shepard renewed the book series I thought the new books would be awful. You know, like most of the shows in USA, the producers milk them for money, making more and more seasons until they become boring.
That's not the case with the Pretty Little Liars books. Sure, the author could have make 4 books and stops. Does she renewed the series for money? Probably. But the books didn't get boring. Shepard managed the make every next book more interesting than the previous one and keep my attention.

This books was intended to be the end of the series... again. And it really felt like this is gonna be the last one. The plot was amazing, the best one yet. That could have been a brilliant ending to the series. So many mysteries was solved in just one book. The strongest plot of all Pretty Little Liars books.
At the time "Wanted" was written, the show became so popular, that the author decided to keep writing. I was surprised but also excited. I didn't know what to expect next. How she was going to keep the plot moving?
The next books didn't disappoint.

"Twisted" takes place one years after "Wanted". A lot of people hated the fact that book 8 wasn't the last one because of the great ending that it has. People thought that writing more books of the series after that is unnecessary.
I agree that "Wanted" has  a great ending and would make a great last book, but I was happy that Sara Shepard decided to keep the plot moving with more books. And the way she did it was brilliant. "Twisted" wasn't any worse than the previous parts and introduced a lot of new mysteries and secrets.
If we keep comparing the book series with the TV show, "Twisted" is the start of season 3 of the books.

Book number 10. If you made it that far, then you are addicted to the series, just like I am. This book didn't reveal much but it was important for the plot. I read it for 2 days. You would think that the series is dragging but honestly, it gets better and better. That's how great writes Sara Shepard is. One series in so many books and yet it doesn't get boring and after you finish one book, you can't wait for the next one.
You are lucky that most of the books are already published. When I started reading the series only 5 books were already released.

With every new secret of the four girls, A. is getting more powerful. Everything was amazing in "Stunning".
Honestly, what would you do if someone knew all of your secrets and threaten you? It's a nightmare.
Book number 11 was awesome. The plot is moving forward but slower than I would like. I really want to see who is A. already but at the same time I don't want the series to end.

In this one a few High Schools are going on an eco friendly cruise. Rosewood is one of the schools on it, and where they go A. is following them.
I read "Burned" two months ago so I can remember basically everything that happened on it. I won't spoil anything for you, but I will tell you that Aria is given something that will change her life.
I liked this one, even if it wasn't one of the best. The series is definitely one of the best ever for young adults. I can't remember any series with that many books that kept my attention for so long.

"Crushed" is book number 13. The four girls was torture by A. for so long that they can't take it anymore. They are ready to fight back, no matter the price.
Their schools is preparing for a prom but everything that is in girls' mind is how to get to A.
I really loved "Crushed". Honestly, I don't know how I'm gonna feel when I see who A. is, after so many months reading the books. I have some suspicions but you never know with this series.
The end better be good!

That's the last book of the series that I read and the last one published. Aria, Emily, Hanna, and Spencer have all keep terrible secrets that could put them behind bars. A. knows everything and now she's changing her strategy. If her new plan succeed the four girls will be put in jail.
It's a fantastic read and really turns up the heat. The end surprised me.
If you made it that far with the series and already read "Deadly", you don't have a choice but to wait for the next one to be published.

What do you think of the book series? Do you like the TV show? Which is better the show or the books?

  1. I haven't read the books yet, but I love the show! My roommate says the books are totally different than the shows, but still have slightly the same concepts.

    1. Yeah, the concept and the style are the same. I can't really decide what I like more the books or the show.

  2. Movies tend to be different than the books ;-)
